Ferraro, Obama and Invoking Race in Its Rejection

The first video below is brilliantly funny. Watch it, it won’t disappoint. It pokes fun at the Clinton campaign for invoking race while rejecting it. After watching I started thinking if such a thing were even possible.

First, the racial highlights of the campaign: (1) There was Bill Clinton’s Jesse Jackson remark in S. Carolina. (2) The whole which candidate can own MLK day fiasco. (3) The recent comments made by Clinton supporter and former VP candidate, Geraldine Ferraro. If you haven’t read the quote, here it is: If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position…. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept. What sticks out here is its grammatical incorrectness. Was should be were. Just kidding. To be fair, I posted a video of Ferraro defending herself. It’s the link at the bottom of the page. It’s also worth noting that HRC said that she disagreed with the statement. And by now we know, Ferraro resigned from Clinton’s finance committee.

I’m skeptical of all those who say that Hillary has “played the race card.” Obviously, to do it overtly, would be political suicide. I think Bill Clinton’s Jesse Jackson comment was taken out of context as was Hillary’s MLK blunder. Watch Ferraro defend herself. She does a decent job but I have to admit that her explanation left me a little unsatisfied. So if Hillary were to play the race card, it would have to be so subtle as to be undetectable…. or…. she would have to invoke race passively while rejecting it as the first video suggests. But if Clinton thinks there’s any truth to what Ferraro said, it would only help Obama to passively paint him as the black candidate.

    THE OBAMA GAMBIT

Barack Obama denies his race to boost his race in the Presidential
contest the way the mother denied her child to save her child before
King Solomon. In an atmosphere heavy with the scent of Afro-Sheen
at the Negro state-college in Mississippi, Obama announced that “race
should not be a factor” and that he was “against racism.” However,
Obama selected as his venue one of the most-segregated of institutions,
never once upbraiding his own kind for being “birds of a feather, flocking
together.” His warm-up music was not the Beach Boys, but the
standard “gang-banga” discord of loud drumbeats and “soul” rhythm.
His introducer was Joseph Lowery of “black-is-beautiful” fame.

Obama insisted that he wished to end the killing in Darfur, but never
mentioned halting the killing in Rhodesia. The only difference being that
Negroes are being killed in Darfur, whereas whites are being killed in
Rhodesia. He mentioned giving money for the AIDS-epidemic, but omitted
that Negroes, especially in Africa, are the chief-carriers of the plague.
He didn’t have to explain himself, because it was obvious to whom
he was pandering and what he meant. He doted on doling out subsidies
to every student to go to college, regardless of ability to pay or pass
“standardized tests.” Students who pass tests already get financial-aid,
but that is not enough for unqualified Negroes.

Obama stated that people should not vote “because of race,” but he
never told the Negro-audience not to vote for him, because of his race.
In fact, he kept using the code-word “community.” He was part of the
“community,” he insisted. He once worked as a “community-organizer.”
He didn’t need to elaborate on what he meant by the “community,”
which is interchangeable with the “‘hood,” “inner-city,” “quarters”
or “projects.” Obama repeated his mantra that he wanted to “give back
to the community.” If a non-Negro had made the remark, there might
have been bewilderment as to who might be the beneficiaries. But,
there was no doubt at Jackson State University.

Obama harked “change” and, indeed, this would be the year of “change.”
But, one gazing at the lines queuing into the auditorium could envision
the same lines coming off the slave-ships. Some in the lines had gaudy
tattoos, others gyrated a mini “Watusi” dance, to the beat from high-tech
ear-phones. Some groped each other, in suggestive-postures, while others
stared ahead with blank-expressions, as if to say, “Tell me where to go and
how to vote.” John Sharp Williams had once commended the overthrowers
of the Reconstruction for ending the “rule of ignorance.” So, even as the
pendulum was swinging back, some were daring to swing it back, again.

Although there was no particular “change” in the assemblage, from the
past to the present, there were “changes” to be made. Obama congratulated
Negro-Congressman Bennie Thompson, forced into office under the so-called
Voting-Rights Act, presaging the day when non-Negroes would be forced
out, likewise. There were there still policemen, mayors, teachers and judges
to be ousted and neighborhoods, schools and, even, families to be integrated.
Outside, Negroes sold T-shirts featuring Obama superimposed on an American
flag, but, from under the table, they parlayed the face superimposed on the
red-green-and-black “Republic of New Africa” flag to the younger “homies.”

Using “code-words” is not a new phenomenon. Woodrow Wilson ran
on a plank to “keep us out of war,” but, promptly, plunged America into
conflict. Segregationists were prone to refer to their cause as “states
rights” or “constitutional government,” when it seemed suitable to be less
in-your-face. But, when pundits noted that Obama carried a certain area
because there was a large number of Negroes there, there were no gasps
or, even, sighs. When only a handful of non-Negroes showed up at the
Obama-fest and was largely bearded, obese or “nerdy” types, the
“collective wisdom” seemed to be that non-Negroes stayed away because
    of “prejudice,” “bigotry” or “racism.”

    One conservative-Democrat gave Obama a “thumbs-down” in a brief
face-to-face. But the exchange belied what chess-players call the “gambit.”
A savvy player allows his opponent to gleefully capture a piece, but,
unawares, paves the way for a larger strategy of checkmate. The elevating
of Negroes by Obama, though the use of “code-words,” has, ironically,
given Americans impetus to elevate themselves, perhaps not by using
“overt” appeals, but by making clear that their blood counts. Already,
such terms as the “American People,” the “American nation” and the
“United States” are being heard to signify not the Obama “community,”
    but the post-Obama turnabout.
